  • Ideas of Taliban spread

    The Taliban spread their beliefs across Swat.
    -As the ideas/beliefs of the Taliban disperse, the people of Swat are more aware of the Taliban's intentions.
  • Schools for girls are threatened

    The Taliban threatens to rid of schools for girls because they believe that educating females opposes Islamic teachings.
    -This threat had caused students, parents, and teachers to worry for their rights and safety. Many schools are destroyed except the school run by Malala's father.
  • Malala's First Speech

    Malala had started to put her beliefs into action. She delivered her first speech, which was concerned with the Taliban snatching away girls' rights to education, in Peshawar.
    -Malala's speech influenced some to go strong with their beliefs and to not give in.
  • Taliban issues order against female education and takes control of schools for girls

    The Taliban shuts down all of the schools for girls in Swat.
    -Many young female students believe that they no longer have the right to education. However, Malala continues with her schoolwork.
  • The order against female education is reversed by the Taliban

    Taliban leader, Fazlullah, announces via radio that females may continue with their schooling.
    -Many girls are overjoyed by the fact that they can return to school. However, Fazlullah has allowed girls to go to school only if they wear burqas. Although girls' right to education has been restored, Malala realizes that ordering females to wear burqas when they go out limits their right to appearance (for one right to be enacted, another right is abolished).
  • Evacuating Swat

    800,000 people, including Malala and her family, leave Swat for safety.
    -The people of Swat were already in distress due to the Taliban taking control of their lives. Fear had continued to increase as they had to flee their homes for safety. Many left behind objects or areas that they held close to their hearts.
  • The Taliban arrives at Swat

    The Taliban arrives at Swat and destroys most of the valley.
    -Once the people of Swat were informed of what the Taliban has finally done, they were devastated. Many went home to (whatever was left of home) crumbling shelters and dead livestock.
  • Osama bin Laden has been killed

    U.S. Navy SEALs had captured and killed Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad.
    -It was reported that Pakistani intelligence was embarrassed after the death of bin Laden. However, it was not very clear how much influence this event had on Al Qaeda. The death of Osama bin Laden had opened the eyes of Malala to what was happening outside of her country.
  • Malala is attacked

    Due to Mala's words, her beliefs gained attention and support. The Taliban had been keeping a close eye on Malala's actions and had found out that she was behind the diary of "Gul Makai" (a pseudonym). In an effort to put an end to the support Malala had recieved, a member of the Taliban had shot Malala on her way home from school.
    -The crisis spread throughout Swat and brought more fear to its people, especially to Malala's family. Many had thought that they lost both Malala and their rights.
