  • Mckinley Tariff

    Mckinley asked Congress to intervene in Cuba after one of their ships was destroyed, killing 260. On April 25 Congress declared war on Spain.
  • Teller Amendment

    Stated that once Cuba won its independence from Spain, the United States leave government and control of the island to the people.
  • Spanish American War

    Spanish American War
    First battle was fought in the Philippines and Commodore Dewey easily defeated Spanish fleet. Fighting in Cuba was tougher and lieutenant colonel Theodore Roosevelt had resigned his post. Led cavalry unit of about 1,000 soldiers which was called the "Rough Riders".
  • Annexation of Hawaii

    Queen Liliuokalani announced her plan to publish a new constitution and supporters of annexation declared end of monarchy and set up government of their own. New government petitioned United States for annexation but Cleveland denied it. President McKinley annexed Hawaii, depsite opposition of Hawaii population.
  • The Boxer Rebellion

    Secret society called Fists of Righteous Harmony - known as Boxers - circulated handbills blaming foreigners for China's troubles. In spring of 1900, Boxers attacked western missionaries and killed more than 200 people; which became known as the Boxer Rebellion.
  • U.S. and Panama Canal

    U.S. and Panama Canal
    U.S. wanted to shorten time between seas, so they wanted to dig a canal across Panama to shorten time. Key Panama leaders began revolution against Columbia in order to have the canal built.
  • Hay--Bunau-Varilla Treaty

    Gave United States complete and unending sovereignty over 10-mile-wide Canal Zone.
  • Roosevelt Corollary

    United States pledged to use armed forces to prevent and European country from seizing Dominican Republic territory. U.S. took control of collecting all Dominican customs duties.
  • Great White Fleet

    Great White Fleet
    Nickname for United States Navy that completed trip around the world until 1909. Consisted of 16 battleships and Roosevelt wanted to expand the Navy.
  • Dollar Diplomacy

    Taft suggested replacing European loans with American ones, argued that increasing U.S. economic power would reduce chances of European intervention. U.S. government helped Nicaragua to get private loans from them.
  • Annexation of Philippines

    Annexation of Philippines
    In 1902, Congress passed Philippine Government Act which established a govenor and two-house legislature. United States would appoint the governor and legislature's upper house, but voters would elect the lower house. On July 4, 1946, U.S. granted independence to Philippines.
