American Imperalism

  • McKinley Tariff

    McKinley passed the tariff in hopes of helping society and blamed lowering tariffs of economic depression in 1893. It also refocused criticsm on democrats for the lower tariffs.
  • Teller Amendment

    This amendment was a response from Congress to President McKinley that they couldn't annex Cuba, but had to leave control of the island to its people.
  • Spanish American War

    The government pushed America into a war with Mexico over the border between Mexico and Texas and the offer of purchase of land in America.
  • Annexation of Hawaii

    On July 7th, 1898, President McKinley signed Hawaii as a state because he saw the growing importance of Hawaii as an export resource and the ideals of using the islands as defense in the Pacific region.
  • Annexation of the Philippines

    The Philippines fought for independence against America in the Philippine-American War since the United States tried to "christianize" the country. The U.S. annexed the islands quickly to prevent European countries from annexing the Philippines.
  • The Boxer Rebellion

    A secret society in Northern China began a terror campaign against Chinese converts and Chinese Missionaries. They were called 'The Boxers' because they practiced martial arts and calisthenic rituals. They killed many Christians across the country and killed Chinese Christians on sight.
  • Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty

    This treaty was established between the United States and Panama, setting boundaries for the Panama Canal Zone which eventually became the Panama Canal.
  • U.S. and the Panama Canal

    The Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty was the okay to build the Panama Canal which would help expand trade for the United States. Contruction began in 1904 and lasted until 1914,when the canal was finally finished.
  • Roosevelt Corollary

    Roosevelt believed that Europe should not intervene in other country's (south to the U.S.) business, but that intervention could be justified in the U.S. under certain conditions.

    The Great White Fleet

    President Roosevelt sent a fleet of 16 ships around the world to show the American sea power. Many ships joined as the Great White Fleet toured the world.
  • Dollar Diplomacy

    The Dollar Diplomacy was the loaning of America's money to foreign countries for the reason of creating "stability abroad." It was meant to further the United States' 'friendships' with other countries as it tried to coax good relations.
