    Hitler ordered for the troops to cut off food supplies instead of just killing; he wanted them to starve into submission. This siege went on for 872 days. There was a total of 200,000 military and 1,200,000 civilian deaths.

    Hitler had his eyes set on the Ukranian city of Odessa for his 'lebensraum' for Germany. The city held out for about 70 days, but eventually gave in under German pressure. Approxiamately 280,000 people, mostly Jews, were killed or deported during this 70 day period.

    Khatyn Massacre: German SS men massacred civilians in the Bellorussian village of Khatyn, killing its entire population of 149, 75 which were children. The village was then burned to the ground.

    Romania was Germany's only oil field within her borders, and the city was surrounded by refineries that turned oil into fuel for the German war machines. On August 1, 1943, 117 B-24 Liberator bombers were sent and did much damage, but it was very costly. As Dwight Eisenhower predicted, repairs in Germany were made quickly and 30% of the raid force was lost.

    The Hürtgen Forest is located at the border of Germany and Belgium; it was a wooded area that was 50 square miles wide. This battle was the longest single battle fought on GErman grounds. The battle was inconclusive until December 16, when it was succeeded by the Battle of the Bulge. It was an Allied victory.

    The Battle of the Bulge was also known as the Ardennes Offensive and the Von Rundstedt Offensive. It was a continue-on from the Battle of the Hürtgen Forest. It was a major German offense launched towards the end of World War II. In the end, the Allies had the victory.

    Recorded as the only events when nuclear weapons were used, the US sent atomic bombs in Japan. The cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki were hit harshly. 6 days after the bombing, Japan signed the Instrument of Surrender, officially ending the Pacific War.
