Germany begins occupation of Denmark and invades Norway.
Norway was invaded by Nazi Germany on April 9th 1940. Hitler had issued the order for the invasion of Norway on March 1st under the code word “Weserübung”. The order also included the invasion and occupation of Denmark. -
Soviets and Japanese sign neutrality pact.
The Soviet–Japanese Neutrality Pact was signed between Russia and Japan two years after the war between Russia and Japan at the Manchurian and Mongolian borders slowed inconclusively. -
America Enters
Japan sent planes to Pearl Harbor to strike the U.S. fleet that blocked Japan's access to oil. America entered the war. -
Brazil declares war on Germany and Italy.
In all, 21 German and two Italian submarines were responsible for the sinking of 36 Brazilian merchant ships, causing 1,691 drownings and 1,079 other casualties. The sinkings were the main reason that led the Brazilian government to declare war against the Axis. -
German surrender at Stalingrad.
In the defeat, the crippling losses suffered by Germany's military proved to be insurmountable for the war. The battle was a turning point in the war, making a German victory in the East impossible. -
