Berlin Blockade and Airlift
The Berlin Blockade began on April 1st, 1948, and it lasted until May 12, 1949. After WWII, Germany was occupied by 4 countries; Britain, France, the Soviet Union, and the U.S. Berlin was under control of the Soviets, and the Soviets were angered. They slowly began to block Berlin off for 'repairs.' Over time, they slowly advanced the blockade. The Airlift lasted for 320 days. After many failures, the airlift restored hope in the individuals on the other side of the wall. May 12, 1949, it ended. -
Korean War
*Dates will vary The Korean War started on June 25, 1950, and ended on July 27, 1953. During the Korean War, no atomic weapons were used, but arial bomb warfare was very common. On July 27, 1953 the Korean Armistice was signed, officially bringing an end to the war. -
Rosenberg Trials
Julius Rosenberg and his wife, Ethel, were sentenced to death on June 19, 1953. They were the first American citizens to ever be put to death for crimes of espionage against the U.S. Why were they put to death? The Rosenbergs were accused of selling secret information about atomic bombs to the Soviets. Even though many people did not believe that the Rosenbergs should have been put to death, they were anyways. -
Vietnam War
*Disclaimer, not actual date, dates will vary from sources. The Vietnam war began sometime in 19544. It started as a result of the spreading of communism and how other countries, including the U.S, didn't want it to spread to their country. It endeed in 1975, but not the way many wanted it too. Communism had won over Vietnam. -
U-2 Spy Plane
*Disclaimer, this was not the official date that the U-2 Spy Plane was flown, the actual date varies depending on sources. A prototype of the first U-2 Spy Plane was flown in 1955, but the actual U-2 Spy Plane was up in the air in 1956. NASA launched the spy plane which was equipped with cameras, and equipment to record enemy radio transmissions. In 1960 another U-2 Spy Plane attempted to fly over the Soviet Union, but it was shot down by the Soviets. -
Sputnik/1st Man in Space
Sputnik I was launched by the Soviets on October 4th, 1957. It gave the Soviet Union the edge it needed to momentarily put them in the lead of the Space Race. Sputnik I paved the way for Sputnik II and other astronomical beings. -
Berlin Wall (Built and Torn Down)
The Berlin Wall was built on August 13, 1961. It was built to sepperate Germany into two sepperate parts, based on politics. The wall prevented people on the East side of Germany from crossing over to the West Side of Germany, and vise versa. On November 10th, 1989 the wall was torn down by the people. -
SALT I and SALT II
*Disclaimer, not official day of the SALT treaties, due to the fact that there are two of them, and that the dates vary. SALT stands for Strategic Arms Limitations Talks. There were two rounds of these, the first being in 1969, and the second being in 1979. The treaties that resulted because of SALT I and SALT II were: Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty, and START (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty) -
1st Man on the Moon
The sending of the first man on the moon was a result of the Space Race between the Soviets and the U.S. It was brought on by NASA, which stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The actual first man on the moon was Neil Armstrong. -

The Soviet Union started in 1917 with the Bolsheviks. Gorbachev came to power and let people question the communist ways, which was never allowed before. Now people were doubting communism, as a result in the failure of the Space Race with the U.S.
