1789-1840 Georgia's Growth

  • 1783- Yazoo Land Sale

    In 1783, legislators took bribes to illegally sell land to 4 companies; This increased Georgia's economy because they sold 35,000,000 acres for $500,000. (New Georgia Encyclopedia)
  • 1793- Cotton Gin

    The cotton gin was created by Eli Whitney in 1793, he created this life changing machine because it could take the cotton seeds and separated the cotton seeds from the cotton fibers in a more efficient and faster way; It increased the states growth because Georgia became the first colony to produce cotton commercially.   • Tent Revivals

    Tent Revivals is a gathering of christian worshippers, where they celebrate Jesus Christ; This helped Georgia's population increase because religious people could come to the state of Georgia if they wanted to celebrate their religion.
  • 1804-UGA

    UGA was the first state-chartered public university; Georgia's economy has increased because of UGA, this helped the economy because of student salaries, student spending, tourists and sports. (New Georgia Encyclopedia)
  • 1805- Headright System

    The headright system were poorly kept records, and number of parcels were 4 times the population; This increased Georgia's economy because it was 1/4 shillings per acre.
  • 1805- Land Lottery

    Land Lotteries were a chance to win a lot of land if you were poor or rich; This was an increase in Georgia's economy because the people didn't have to pay, the government paid them in land grants.
  • 1832- Railroad

    The first railroad was chartered in 1832, it was created by businessmen in Athens, they needed a way to transport cotton to Augusta due to poor road conditions; this helped increase Georgia's economy because it developed new towns like Atlanta, Cornelia and many other places in GA, this gave visitors more places to enjoy, they would spend money on new attractions.
  • 1838 & 1839-Trail of Tears

    In 1838 and 1839, Andrew Jackson's Indian Removal Act was taking place, it forced all Cherokee to migrate to Oklahoma; The result for the Trail of Tears had an increase in Georgia's economy, when they removed the Cherokee they found gold, growth in cotton agriculture and arable land.
