  • Headright System

    In the Headright System, every settler was given 100 aches of land and 50 more for each member of household. The government of Georgia realized that records were poorly kept and there was not enough land for the system.(New Georgia Encyclopedia, notes)
  • UGA

    UGA was the first university in America to be created by a state government. And helped create the education system we have today.(new Georgia encyclopedia, notes)
  • Sequoyah

    Sequoyah was the creator of the Cherokee syllabary. He did this single handedly, helping natives communicate in a written language.(Notes and new Georgia Encyclopedia.)
  • Cotton Gin Impact

    The 1st cotton gin was invented by Massachusetts native Eli Whitney, The gin has wire teeth attached to a boxed rotating cylinder that, when moved, pulls cotton through small grates to separate the seeds, that beforehand had to be handpicked out by slaves and farmers. The economy got a major increase after the Gin was invented and slave population in some places doubled. (new Georgia encyclopedia)
  • Yazoo Land Fraud

    Georgia was week after te revolution, and needed martials. So the general assembly sold land to businesses with out citizen or natives approval, which later started the Trail of Tears.(New Georgia encyclopedia)
  • Dahlonega Gold Rush

    Jesse Hogan discovered gold in Ward's Creek near Dalonga in 1829, and the gold rush towns spread through present day Lumpkin County. Since the population increased b 1,000 by 1832, the gold rush settlers forced out the natives from there home land and the Georgas quickly settled in.
  • Rail roads

    People and businesses needed a better way to transport there cotton across Georgia. The rail roads were the "starting point" for some of the major cities like Atlanta.(information from notes)
  • Trail of Tears

    After Major Ridge sighed off Cherokee land, Chief Ross collected 16,000 Cherokee signatures against the treaty until the U.S. government sent the army to roundup natives. People estimate that 4,000-5,000 Cherokees died on "The Trail of Tears."(New Georgia Encyclopedia and notes)
  • Land lotteries

    During the twenty-eight years in which the lottery operated(1805-1833), Georgia sold approximately three-froths of the state to about 100,000 people and families for small amounts of money.
