    Same people ran again in this race, with the same winner. Republican Williams McKinley defeated Williams Jennings Bryan. In 1901 McKinley was shot and a few days later died. Theodore Roosevelt was Vice President and took over.

    The Democratic nominee was Alton B. Parker and was defeated by Theodore Roosevelt.

    Roosevelt promised Americans that he would not run for a 3rd term. Roosevelt persuaded his good friend, William Taft to run. Taft beat William Jennings Bryan.

    Roosevelt ran again in this election as a Third Party Candidate for the Progressive Party. Woodrow Wilson ran for the Democrats and William Taft for Republicans. Wilson ended up winning the election.

    World War I started in 1914, but the United States did not become involved until 1917. Germany submarine attacks and the Zimmerman Telegram led President Wilson to declare war against Germany.

    This treaty was signed by the allies after they won World War I and the Germans. Germany had to take responsibility for the damages caused by the war and they had to give up some of their territory.

    Republican Warren G. Harding had a big victory over Democratic candidate James M. Cox. This was also the first election that woman could vote and only 36% of women that were eligible to vote actually voted.
