    USS Maine
    American Naval ship that used during Cuban revolt against Spain. Sunk in Havana Harbor. Built because of the British’ battleship, Riachuelo but also to increase forces in america. The USS Maine was said to be destroyed and sunk by an external mine. Killing almost three-fourths of the crew, the USS Maine sank rapidly. Another reason for US to go to war.
  • Open Door Policy

    Open Door Policy
    American Policy 1899 and 1900. Appointed by U.S. Secretary of State John Hay. Wanted all foreign powers to agree to have commercial access to China but on equal terms, at the same time all foreign powers must also respect China. In 1900 Hay was able to secure the votes for the open door policy from all major foreign powers. Very good for the US so that we could trade.

    Provisions for future disputes. US negotiates attribution treaties with 25 countries except for Germany. After WWl, The main reason for the conclusion of the treaty was that the senate didn't ratify the peace treaty signed in Versailles.

    Hay-Pauncefote Treaty
    A treaty that was signed between U.S. and the United Kingdom on November 18, 1901. Creation of the Panama Canal. The U.S. had the right to create and be in charge or a canal that was across Central America. The canal would adjoin the Pacific, and Atlantic ocean. This treaty was huge for the U.S., made a lot of trading and shippings easier.
  • Platt Amendment

    The US would end its military occupation of Cuba. Cuba had to agree to eight conditions before the withdrawal of the US forces. They couldn't have any other foreign powers to us their island for military purposes.

    Law made that states that other countries cant use its military force against another country to collect debts. This rejected categorically the right of military intervention, Enunciated on December 29, 1902
  • Lusitania

    Lusitania
    Was a British Ocean Liner that had been on 202 Trans-Atlantic Crossings.
    United Kingdom was considered a war zone and the Lusitania was just inside the war zone close to Ireland and A German U boat was waiting out there and fired a missile at the ship and sunk it, the ship was considered a threat to germany due to the ammunition and war supplies on the ship. Over 1,000 people died. It took the ship only 18 minutes to hit the seabed. Over 125 Americans died. One cause of war.
  • The Zimmerman Note

    Secret communication from the German Foreign Office that insisted a military alliance with Mexico, if the US were to enter war against Germany. The British were able to intercept and decode the proposal/offer. When the British received the note they let the US know right away.
  • Fourteen Points

    Fourteen Points
    Statement of principles for peace. President Woodrow Wilson gave a speech on January 8, 1918 on war aims and peace in which he outlined these principles in order to keep peace. The US needed new principles in order to stay together and not have to get involved in any or declare any wars.
  • The Treaty of Versailles

    This treaty was the most important peace agreement that ended WWl. Ended the war between Germany and Allied Powers. Required Germany to accept the consequences for causing so much damage. Sated that Germany was in the wrong and that they would pay for it.
  • League of Nations

    League of Nations
    Began due to the Paris Peace Conference that ended WWl. First international organization that was created to establish world peace. World peace was the key mission during the 1920’s
    In the 1930’s Germany and many others left the league. The league was beginning to fail and their mission to prevent another world war was slipping away. The league only lasted and peace was not kept, soon there was a second world war. After WWll the United Nations(UN) was formed in 1946.
  • Washington Naval Conference

    Held by Warren G. Harding, at Memorial Continental Hall in downtown Washington DC.
    Ended in three major treaties (Four-Power Treaty. Five-Power Treaty, Nine-Power Treaty)
    These treaties kept peace in the 1920’s but was not renewed in the time of The Great Depression. Kept the US somewhat stable during the depression.
  • The Dawes Plan

    Charles G. Dawes, In 1924 there was an attempt to force Germany to pay back for everything they have done. WWl reparations. Since Dawes’ Plan fixed and resolved an international war crisis, Charles G. Dawes shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1925 for his plan. This was big for the US for expenses.
