The KKK marched down Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington D.C. At this time, white Americans were more racist than at any other point in history. This changed American history because it was a showcase of racism in broad daylight- and in of all places, Washington D.C. -
Barbara Johns Walks Out
"Barbara Johns led a walkout by four hundred black students to protest inadequate facilities at segregated Robert R. Moton High School in Farmville, Virginia." They vowed to boycott classes until the all-white school paid attention and did something about their complaints. This changed history because it led to more schools being integrated- not segregated. -
Emmett Till is Murdered
In Mississippi, Emmett Till's killers thought he had flirted with a white woman- so they mutilated him beyond recognition. This changed history because it was a showcase of how racism could push people to do heinous crimes. -
The Children March In Birmingham
The civil rights movement in the 1960s pushed people to do something about racism and segregation. Children were attacked by dogs and water cannons as they protested segregation. This caused an uproar and pushed more people to protest the treatment of blacks. -
Thich Quang Duc's Self Immolation is Broadcast
International newspapers and TV stations broadcasted Buddhist monk Thich Quang Duc burning himself to death for a demonstration that changed the course of the Vietnam War. -
Alcatraz is Occupied
An alliance known as the Indians of All Tribes seized Alcatraz and built a thriving village on the island. Negotiations to get them to leave ended when President Nixon agreed to grant amnesty to those involved. -
The US Embassy in Tehran is Occupied
