1st Semester Timetoast Timeline Review

  • Introduction of the Telegraph

    The telegraph was one of the first ways to send messages thousands of miles almost instantly. It was invented by Samuel Morse. In 1866, Cyrus Field layed a telegraph cable across the Atlantic Ocean, allowing instant communication between Europe and the United States.
  • Homestead Act

    Act that gave settlers 160 acres of farming land for free. The person would pay a filing fee and agree to live on the land for five years.
  • End of the Civil War

    Even though the Civil War had ended and slavery was abolished, there were still several battles to fight. The south was torn apart and needed to be reorganized. Former slaves were still treated like slaves. They were greatly discriminated in the South and were not treated like whites.
  • Transcontinental Railroad

    This was the first railroad to cross the United States.
  • Boss Tweed Jailed

    William Tweed was sentenced to twelve years in prison for corruption. He died there in 1878.

  • Battle of Little Bighorn

    Also known as Custer's Last Stand, the Battle of Little Bighorn occured near the Little Bighorn River. The battle was between a Lakota-Northern Cheyenne combined force led by Sitting Bull and the 7th Calvary regiment of the United States Army. During the battle, five of the seventh's companied were wiped out, and Colonel George Custer and his two brothere were killed. It was a great victory for the Lakota-Northern Cheyenne Indians.
  • Reconstruction Ends

    This was a great change in the South. However, segregation against blacks was still a huge issue.
  • Chinese Exclusion Act

    This act banned Chinese immigrants from coming to America in search for jobs.
  • The Creation of Time Zones

    Time Zones were established with the Transcontinental Railroad. They made time consistent throughout the US.
  • The Pendelton Act is Passed

    This event led to the passing of the Civil Service Commission, which set up competitive exams for federal occupations.
  • Dawes Act

    The goal of this act was to turn Native Americans into farmers, then American citizens, and break up their reservations.
  • Sherman Antitrust Act is Passed

    This Act banned monopolies- when one company controls an entire industry.
  • Battle of Wounded Knee

    Hundreds of Lakota Sioux ran away in fear following Sitting Bull's death. They gathered at the Wounded Knee creek in Southwestern South Dakota. A pistol shot rang out from an unknown location, and the fighting started between the U.S. army and the Indians. The army came to collect the Sioux's weapons. More than 200 Sioux and 25 soldiers were killed. Wounded Knee was the end of battles between whites and Native Americans. The indians were defeated.
  • The Opening of Ellis Island

    This was one of the largest immigration stations in the late 1800's.
