    Civil War in China

    On one side were the Communists, who wanted to make China like the Soviet Union. They were backed by the Soviet Union, and they had the support of many poor people. On the others side were the Nationalists, who wanted to make China like the United States.The Communists were led by Mao Zedong, and the Nationalists were led by Chiang Kai-shek. The only time the civil war stopped was during World War 2 when Japan Invaded. Eventually the communists won. The nationalists fled to the island of Taiwan.

    Nuclear Arms Race

    The Soviet Union developed their first nuclear missle in 1949. Then 4 years later both the soviets and the united states had developed the hydrogen bomb which was way more powerful than the atomic bomb. Everytime the united states would develop a new atomic bomb the soviets would match them. Thus creating a nuclear arms race. In order to stop this growing fear of a nuclear war they both agreed to limit production of nuclear arms. This was voided in 1979 when the soviets invaded Afganistan.

    Communist Cuba and Missle Crisis

    In 1950 Fidel Castro organized a group of armed rebels to try and over throw the government. He was succesful. He looked to the soviet union for sypport and they gladly gave them their support. He nationalized business and took control of most farms. In 1962 the sovuets shipped nuclear missles to cuba. In response to this John F. Kennedy who was president at the time set up a naval blockade around Cuba. And he asked the Soviet Union to withdraw their missles, after a few days they agreed.

    The Korean War was a military conflict between North and South Korea. Korea was divided in the north and the south along the 38th parallel line. Communist supported north korea invaded southern korea causing theUnited Nations (UN) to intervein. The only reason the United States stepped it was because they were afraid that if korea would fall to communism then the rest of Asia would be next.

    The Soviet Union responed to the forming of Nato by forming there own alliance. It included the Soviet Union and 7 other satellites in eastern europe.Unlike Nato the warsaw pact was often invoked by the soviets to keep order in their controlled areas.

    The war was fought between the communist North Vietnam, supported by its communist allies, and the government of South Vietnam, supported by the United States and other anti-communist nations. The Viet Cong, a lightly armed South Vietnamese communist-controlled common front, largely fought a guerrilla war against anti-communist forces in the region. The North Vietnamese Army engaged in a more conventional war. The United States entered the war to prevent a communist takeover of South Vietnam.

Mikhail Gorbachev finally gave in and ended censorship know as glasnost and he also relinquished control of all soviet territories. He also introduced Perestroika or government and economic reforms. He tried introducing western philosophies to the government and economy which caused the collapse.
