Civil War
Civil war starts in 1861 and ends in 1865. Arose out of disputes over the issues of slavery, trade, tariffs, and the doctine of states' rights. -
13th Amendment
This amendment was passed and was ratified on December 6, 1865. This amendment abolished slavery. -
Civil Rights Act
Was passed to protect the rights of African Americans in the United States. It was later declared unconstitutional by the supreme court. -

Klu Klux Klan founded
Ku Klux Klan was originally organized in the winter of 1865-1866 in Pulsaki, Tennessee. -
14th Amendment Passed
This amendment was passed in June of 1866 and later ratified in 1868. It granted citzenship to and protect the civil liberties of recently freed slaves. -
Jim Crow Laws begin to emerge into society
Jim Crow Laws emerged in the Souther states after the Civil war. This system created a barrier fto equal rights that favored white people. -
15th Amendment Ratified
Granted African American men the right to vote. -
Enforcement Acts
Between March of 1870 and February 1871 Congress oassed the Enforcement Acts which are, criminal codes that protected blacks' right to vote, hold office, serve on juries, and receive equal protection of laws. -

NAACP Founded
Nation's oldest and largest organization based on Civil Rights. -
CORE Founded
This group believed in non-voilent direct action and organized the Freedom Rides of 1961. Their goal was to have a true equality all over the world. -
Brown V. Board of Education
Ruled that racial segregation in public schools violated the 14th Amendment ti the constitution. -
Montgomery Bus Boycott
This was the day when blacks decided that they would boycott buses until they could sit anywhere they wanted, instead of being forced to the back of the bus when whites boarded. -
Rosa Parks Arrested
Rosa Parks was arrested for violating the Montgomery City code of not moving to give up her seat on the bus for a white person because the white section was filled up. -
SCLC Founded
This organization was founded after the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Martin Luther King Jr. establish and led this group. It's goal was to advance the cause of civil rights through non-violence. -
SNCC Founded
This organization was led by black college students who coordinated sit-ins and other non-violent activities. -
John F. Kennedy's Inaugural Speech
Promising to end racial discrimination and segregation. -
First Freedom Ride
Seven blacks and six whites travel were to travel from Washington D.C. to New Orleans Louisiana. The bus did not make it to far and several angry whote people set the bus on fire. -
Birmingham Protest Begins
Led by Martin Luther King Jr. in opposition to the segregation laws. -
Civil Rights Act
Every American had the right to vote, go to school, get a job, and be served in a public place without any sort of discrimination. -
Equal Opportunity Act Passed
Promoted several programs containing health, education and welfare for poor blacks. -
Harlem Riot
Urban protest as a result of polic brutality and social injustice. -
Democratic Convention
Highlighted the undemocratic exclusion of African Americans from voting and participation in the politcal process. -
Elementary and Secondary Act Passed
Provided funds for professional development, school materials, parental involvement, and resources to support educational programs. -
Medicare/Medicaid Act Passed
Helped with the issue of poor health care for minorities and funding for senior citizens. -
The Voting Rights Act
This act was passed allowing and guaranteeing voting rights for black southerners and and helping to elect African Americans at the local, state, and federal levels. -
Watts Riot in LA
A rebellion that indicated the violent urban uprisings. This riot lasted for 5 days. -
Immigration Act Passed
This act was signed into legislation and became and actual law on July 1, 1968 allowing individuals from third world countries to enter the United States. -
Black Panther Party Founded
A powerful, political group that was organized as a means of self-defense which attracted young black students and other organizations. It's purpose was to implement survival programs, free clinics, breakfast programs, free shoes, school and education programs and prisoners legal aid and support programs. -
Detroit Riot
One of the most dealiest and destructive riots in U.S. history that last for 5 days. -
Democratic Convention
Spoke about issues concerning Vietname War policies, selecting presidential candidates, and addressed police violence towards protesters.
