    Issued Emancipation Proclamation
    The Emancipation Proclamation declared slaves free within the Confederacy. The proclamation led the way for the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment.     The Gettysburg Address is known as the greatest speech in American history. It was delivered at the dedication of the Soldier’s National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, after the Union armies defeated the Confederacy at the Battle of Gettysburg.     Lincoln defeated Democrat George B. McClellan, receiving 212 of 233 electoral votes and 55 percent of the popular vote. Lincoln’s famous second inaugural address speech (Mar. 4, 1865) is now inscribed on one wall of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D. C.: "With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation's wounds..."     Lincoln is Assassinated
    While attending the play "Our American Cousin" at Ford's Theater with his wife, Lincoln was shot in the head by John Wilkes. Doctors attended to the president in the theater, then moved him to a house across the street. He never regained consciousness and died the next day. Photo Credit:
