31 US states require children to attend school
In 1900, thirty-one US states required children ages eight through fourteen to attend public schools to learn to read and write. Eventually, all fifty states required children to go to school from kindergarten through twelfth grade. -
Brown vs Board of Education
The Supreme Court's decision to rule against segregation of whites and blacks in the school setting. They ruled that it was unconstitutional to allow schools to separate children because of their skin color. This has allowed schools to treat all students equally instead of dividing the student body. -
No Child Left Behind Act
The No Child Left Behind Act was passed in 2002 and requires all states to test students in third grade through eighth grade in reading and math standardized tests. It also supports students with disabilities to ensure that they also receive proper education to stay on level with their peers. -
MENSA overrules SAT
Mensa decided that the SAT is an ineffective way of determining the intelligence of students. This test is still suggested by many schools but is not used a determining factor of one's intelligence.
