  • Piaget

Piaget's finding published in 1920's. Theory based on the idea that a child develops through four stages of dev. 4 Stages: (1) the sensorimotor stage from birth to 2 years, (2) the preoperational stage from 2 to 7 years, (3) the concrete-operational stage from 7 to 12 years, and (4) the stage of formal operations.
Ed Impact: Plan development ly appropriate lessons.
Technology: Wiki to create a commnity of social learning and sharing information. Blog: Students learn from eachother.
  • John Dewey

Dewey (1859-1952) believed that learning was active and schooling unnecessarily long and restrictive. Believed they needed to learn through real life tasks. Impact on Education: Increased hands-on learning and experiential education. Technology: Skype: interacting with people and learning first hand.
  • Skinner

Skinner’s entire theory is based on operant conditioning. Reinforcement is the key element in Skinner's S-R theory.
Impact on Education: Teachers implementing style of "drill practice" and conditioning students. Technology: Skill Practice Websites such as: http://www.netrover.com/~kingskid/drills/drill.htm

  • Computers used in University

Students in university use mainframe systems for programming
  • Gagne

Instructional design and delivery: Created a nine-step process called the events of instruction, which correlate to and address the conditions of learning.
Impact on Education: Teachers implement the 9 steps: Gain attention, Inform learners of objectives, Stimulate recall of prior learning, Present the content, Provide "learning guidance", practice, etc.
Technology: Smartboard: Easily keep student informed and engaged.
  • Bruner

Bruner's Theory: Inquiry based learning. Learning through discover. Students interact with the world by exploring and manipulating objects, wrestling with questions and controversies, or performing experiments
Impact on Education: Many teacher began to implement inquiry based learning in math and science. More open ended instruction as opposed to direct instruction.
Technology: Google: Allows students to explore a topic and come up with their own information and new questions on the topic.
  • Computer-assisted instruction movement emerges

Large scale federally funded university projects use mainfram/minicomputer systems with schools.
  • Vygotsky

Vygotsky's Theory: Social interaction plays a fundamental role in learning. The potential for learning depends upon the "zone of proximal development" (ZPD): The range of skill that can be developed with adult guidance or peer collaboration exceeds what can be attained alone. Impact on Ed: More collaborative work groups and interaction. Technology: Wiki- social learning and sharing. Google Docs: Again sharing info and learning from eachother.

  • Gardner

Gardner's theory argues that intelligence, particularly as it is traditionally defined, does not sufficiently encompass the wide variety of abilities humans display. Multiple intelligence theory, there are eight basic types of intelligence.

Impact on Education: Differentiated instruction implemented to meet the needs of different types of learners.
Technology: Voice Thread- Digital Story telling/Podcasts allows students to be creative and express their knowledge in a format they choose.
