    Ernesto Zedillo Ponce de Leon, PRI candidate, was elected as president after Mexico's previous leader, Luis Donaldo Colosio, was murdered. The PRI lost seats in the congress but retained their governing power. Some believed that the PRI used fraud to control the elections, but before the 1994 elections there was not much doubt. The election of 1994 was distinctive both because it was largely considererd to be free from faud and because there was considerable uncertainty about the outcome.

  • *Zapatista Guerrillas stage "Zapatour" (social)

    Led by Subcomandante Marcos, the zapista guerrillas staged their 'Zapatour', a march from Chiapas to Mexico City to highlight their demands. Seven years after their uprising against the Mexican government, the zapistas went to the capitol to establish peace. Since the guerrillas have been a large group of rebel supporters causing much dismay for Mexico, many political parties and businesses fear the Zapatistas and though the rebels emphasised that their movement had no electoral aspirations...
  • Govt. abandons prosecution

    Political furore as Mexico City mayor and presidential favorite Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is stripped of his immunity from prosecution by Congress in a land dispute.
  • A federal post of special prosecutor is created to tackle violent crime against women.

    Mexico had been criticised by the UN and rights groups over the unsolved murders of more than 300 women over 12 years in the border city of Ciudad Juarez. 65 miners are killed in an explosion at a coal mine in Coahuila state. President Fox orders an investigation.

    Drug trafficking in Mexico is a major problem. The Mexican Drug War is between drug cartels and the Mexican government.   • *One of country's worst natural disasters

    Heavy rains flood nearly the entire southern state of Tabasco. About 500,000 are made homeless. The Grijavla river, amonog many others, burst its banks on October 31, 2007. Thousands of homes were flooded on after several rivers burst their banks in Tabasco and heavy rains left 70 percent of the swampy region under water.
