OVERVIEW OF UNIT: History of Transportation in Vermont

FIELD TRIP to the VT History Museum
We will tour the Vermont History Museum's Freedom and Unity exhibit for a great overview of transportation in Vermont. We will also learn HOW to be historians with their hands-on workshop using primary sources called You be the Historian. -
RESEARCH: What were modes of transportation in Vermont?
We will make connections with our classroom Vermont Museum objects that were transported in Vermont to HOW these products were transported. Lots of information will be frontloaded with kids taking notes on index cards, storing them by time period (late 1700s, 1800s, 1900s, 2000s). -

Each student will choose one mode of transportation that interests them to research in more depth. FIELD TRIPS to St. Albans History Museum and Swanton Railroad Depot Museum ( we will meet the EXPERTS!). -

As students do their research, they will tailor questions for experts at the St. Albans Historical Museum and the Swanton Railroad Depot Museum. -
Teach it to the rest of us! GLOG
Each student will upload what they learned about their mode of transportation into a GLOG (part 1). They will then practice presenting before teaching the class what they discovered. -
Are changes in transp. and in the land related? ART
Through a series of ART PROJECTS, students will explore this question. Using well-known paintings and Visual Thinking Strategies as inspiration, they will then create a series of landscape paintings demonstrating changes in Vermont's landscape over time (late 1700s, mid-1800s, present day). -
How did Vermonters travel in the past? INTERVIEW
Students will create questions to find out how Vermonters traveled in the past. Then they will practice interview techniques before actually interviewing various community members. Students will write about similarities and differences with how they travel now. Results will be put into GLOG, part 2. -
FIELD TRIP
At the Shelburne Museum, we will explore many modes of transportation. We will also investigate a variety of landscape paintings. -
Write about landscape changes using your ART as springboard.
Students will use their series of completed landscape paintings to make connections with how the land has changed, how it relates to transportation, and how life in Vermont was affected.Results will be put into GLOG, part 3. -
What about transportation today? SKYPE
This will begin our 'current events' phase... students will research transportation issues in our town, county, region, state. They will choose one issue to learn more about. Members from Vt Agency of Trasnportation, and other local committees will be brought in to interview once questions are formed, or to interview via SKYPE. -
Make a recommendation for transportation in VT's future!
Students will use what they've learned about history of transportation as well as about current events to make a recommendation for transportation in our town, or in the State. -
Present your GLOG to show what you know! CELEBRATION
Students will practice presenting their GLOGS with each other, then with another class, and finally with parents and community memberst to demonstrate their understanding of Transportation in Vermont Through the Years. Presentations to be followed by a Vermont dessert reception! We will also do a Vermont contra dance, and show our gallery of landscape paintings. -
FIELD TRIP CELEBRATION
We'll visit the New England Transportation Museum in White River Jct to celebrate our good, hard work. Perhaps we'll even take a TRAIN to get there!
