The proclamation line
The purpose was to organize trade with Native North Americans and to organize Britains new North American empire. Britain was ceded all of North America east of the Mississippi river. Created a boundary line between the North American colonies and areas west of the Appalachian mountains. -
Townshend acts
Series of acts beginning in 1767. The goal was to increase revenue in the colonies to pay the governor's salaries. Acts included the Revenue act of 1767, the indemnity act, the commissioners of customs act, and the New York restraining act. -
The Boston Massacre
The killing of five colonists by British troops. Many British troops in Boston led to brawls between colonists and troops and eventually fired shots. The event started on king street, now state street. Hugh White, a British officer, struck the head of Edward Gerrish after exchanging insults, eventually drawing a bigger crowd. -
The Tea act
Imposed no new taxes. Designed to prop up the East India company which was burdened with 18 million pounds of unsold tea. The tea was to be brought to the colonies and sold at a low price. The sale of tea would undercut the business of local merchants. -
Boston Tea Party
7,000 locals milled about the wharf where ships were docked. A committee went to the customs house to try and force the ships out of the harbor. The collector refused. After the committee reported back a group of 200 or so enraged men disguised as Indians assembled on a hill. They marched 2 by 2 to the wharf and basically dumped the cargo of tea into the harbor to protest the tax. -
Lexington and concord
The first military efforts of the Revolutionary war. General thomas gage sent 700 troops to destroy ammunition colonists had stored in Concord. On the eve of april 18th, British troops were ferried through Boston harbor to begin their march on Lexington. -
Declaration of independence
adopted by congress on July 4th, now independence day. Listed colonial grievances to King George the third. It was written by Thomas Jefferson. It basically announced that the 13th British colonies were now independent.
