    The place we now call New Hampshire was filled (or populated) by native americans, the Abenakis. Our first official european visitors were Martin Pring and Samuel De Champlain.

    In 1622, King James of England gave the land John Smith had claimed to John Mason and to Sir Ferdinando Gorges. John Mason lived in Hampshire, England and decided to name the land New Hampshire.

    The first settlers of New Hampshire were Englishmen in search of good spots to begin their fishing. David Thomson, leader of the group and others landed in 1623 at the mouth of Piscataqua River. Part of the group set up a shop at Pannaway (which is now Rye, NH).

    Mason never came!
    John Mason and Sir Ferdinand Gorges divided up the land. Gorges took the area that became Maine. Mason got New Hampshire lands. Mason sent settlers. Even though he named the land New Hampshire, he died before he ever got to come here.

    In 1630, the settlers built a little town near a field of wild srawberries, and that's why its called Strawbery Banke.

    The collection of settlements became a royal province in 1679 and stayed that way for 19 years. The arrangement continued untile 1741 when New Hampshire succsesfully broke away and went back to a royal province.
