Missouri Compromise
Henry Clay announced that they would have an imaginary line. Any part under the line would be part of the south with slavery and any part over the line would be part of the north without slavery. Maine joined the north and Missourri joined the south. This event kept peace between the south and the north, but the south thought the north would interfere. -
Slavery
For many years there was slavery all over the south. They had to do what their supervisers told them to do, they couldn't have an education, and they had no rights at all. Then Harriet Tubman, a slave, escaped to Canada and free black men and abolitionist were helping her. Then she hepled more than 1,000 slaves to gain their freedom by the end of the Civil War. -
Compromise of 1850
California adopted anti-slavery and joined the Union. Utah and New Mexico got to chose if they should allow or forbid slavery. The north thought the deal wasn't fair. The north and the south were accusing each other that should or shouldn't have slavery. -
Kansas- Nebraska Act
The Kansas- Nebraska Act was when a representative to write a state constitution. It was proposed by Stephen A. Douglas and so each territory got to chose if they should forbid slavery or to allow slavery . Anti- slavery and pro- slavery thought it was fair because Missouri voted illegally. Then Kansas joined the Union months before the Civil War. -
John Brown Rebellion
During Bleeding Kansas, lots of abolitionist were murdered. He became mad that he, his sons and some loyal supporters killed five settlers.Two of his sons were killed and as a result of his actions he was hanged. Many called Brown a hero. -
Election of 1860
Abraham Lincoln was in an election with Hannibal Hamlin. Abraham Lincoln won the election and the south became afraid. The south was afraid that Abraham Lincoln would forbid slavery. The south were so worried that they left the north. -
Secession
Secession is when the southern states became their own country. South Carolina started seceding and then other states started. South Carolina, Georgia, Texas, Mississippi, Tennessee, North Carolina, Florida, Alabama, Arkansas, and Virginia were seceding and making their own country. They elected Jefferson Davis as their president and became the Confederacy.
