    Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri Compromise was an issue with slavery. Half of the states were free and the other states were slave states. Missouri wanted to be a slave state but it would make the balance uneven so Henry Clay said that Maine could become a free state and Missouri could be a slave state to make it even. It was a good suggestion and worked for thirty years until it started to get rough again.
  • Nat Turner's Rebellion

    Nat Turner's Rebellion
    Nat Turner was a highly religious man and believed that he was receiving messages from God which were really visions. His visions kept on getting more and more violent and he believed that he should go out and do what his visions told. He set out with his crew and they went killing as many people as they could especially children. It eventually stopped and Nat Turner was hung.

    Kansas Nebraska Act
    The Kansas Territory and Nebraska Territory wanted to choose whether they wanted to permit slavery or not permit slavery. This was a follow up of the Missouri Compromise. This was a problem because Kansas and Nebraska were both North states. Violence eventually built up and turned in to Bleeding Kansas.

    John Brown Rebellion
    John Brown was an abolitionist. His five sons and a group of loyal supporters and him launched an attack at Harper’s Ferry, Virginia to kill people. He killed almost everyone in the whole town. The battle caused two of his sons to die. People believed he did this because he was so strongly against slavery.

    Election of 1860
    In 1860 Lincoln was running for President against John Bell and John C. Breckinridge. Abraham Lincoln had won all of the votes in the North and John C. Breckinridge won all of them in the south except for Virginia and Tennessee. John Bell had won the rest. People were so cruel to Lincoln they didn’t even have his name on some of the ballots in the south. Despite the southern votes Lincoln won the election.

    Slavery was a huge problem during the Civil War. Lincoln had just been elected which was a problem because he was a slave abolitionist. He wanted slavery to stop, and he did try to stop it everywhere in the states. After time passed the North agreed that there wasn’t going to be any slavery in the North and only slaves in the South. Abraham Lincoln agreed to this but it still was a huge problem to the causes leading up to the Civil War.
  • Dred Scott

    Dred Scott
    Dred Scott was a man who sued for his freedom. Dred Scott his lawyer and wife were fighting for freedom even though they lived in Illinois Territory which is a free territory. They were going to go to the Supreme Court but the judge said no because they weren’t official citizens of the United Slaves.
