  • Northwest Ordinance

    Northwest Ordinance
The Northwest Ordinance created many things. It created a method to admit new states, Prohibited Slavery, established new schools, and established a territorial government. This was the first event when sectionalism started. The south was questioning the North’s authority because they were dictating whether the south can have slavery. This increased the tensions between the north and the South. This also created sectionalism.
  • Eli Whitney & the Cotton Gin

Eli Whitney & the Cotton Gin
The cotton gin was created by Eli Whitney. The cotton gin automatically separated the cotton seeds from the short cotton fiber. This increased the economy a lot, but this also increased the tension between the North and the South. The south believed that now they would need more slaves to support the demand for cotton, and the North argued that the work should be done in factories with the cotton gin.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
The Missouri compromise is when Missouri enters as a slave state and we enter Maine as a free state. The government created a line where every state above that line has to be a free state and any state below that line has the option to be a free or a slave state. This line is called the 36’ 30’ line. This creates a divide between the North and South. And they argue about how the government has jurisdiction over the expansion of slavery.
  • Jackson & Nullification

    Jackson & Nullification
In 1830, Andrew Jackson wanted to put a tariff tax on cotton for Southern States. South Carolina opposed this and didn’t pay. After this, many states started to nullify him also. This led to a national crisis and separated the north and south.
  • King Cotton Argument

    King Cotton Argument
When Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin, cotton was crowned the supreme industry in South. The north wanted to give slaves emancipation but, the South argues that it would hurt the U.S economy and weaken the military. This was a National Security threat and it fueled the tension of sectionalism.
  • Kansas- Nebraska Act

    Kansas- Nebraska Act
The Kansas- Nebraska Act raised the 36’ 30’ line of the Missouri Compromise to increase areas of the slave states. This favors the South drastically and it leads to “Bleeding Kansas”. The North and the South are getting very aggravated amongst each other.
  • Sumneer & Brooks

    Sumneer & Brooks
Massachusetts representatives Charles Sumner was making an anti-slavery argument about slavery when South Carolina representative Preston Brooks became enraged and attacked Sumner. Brooks was kicked out of congress. But, a year later South Carolina voted him back. This displayed the amount of hatred between the North and South. When this happened it showed how much the tension increased because some of the citizens were showing outburst but now the government is violently showing their opinion.
