Civil War Seven Causes

  • Cotton Gin Invented

    Cotton Gin Invented
Before the Cotton Gin, it took a very long time to make cotton. This task was almost always done by slaves however. When the Cotton Gin was invented the North pleaded to stop abuse of slaves because of how well the machine works. The Cotton Gin picks seeds out of the cotton and makes it into usable cotton. But the South decided it needed a larger workforce to make huge amounts of cotton. This lead to a huge explosion of the amount of enslaved people. Soon slaves greatly outnumbered white people.
  • Tariff and Nullifications

    Tariff and Nullifications
The South viewed the Tariifs of 1828 and 1832 as unconstitutional. They claimed that it was unfair and targeted only the South trying to weaken it. South Carolina was the first to begin the nullification and soon other Southern states followed. Congress voted and passed the Force Bill, allowing the President to use miltiary personal to go into a state and collect taxes. This angered the South very much and most backed down except for South Carolina. South Carolina was the last to back down.
  • Texas Annexation

    Texas Annexation
After Texas had one its own independence from Mexico it wanted to become an official part of the United States. However the Southern states wanted to break Texas up into multiple states. Which would give the south many more votes in Congress compared to the North. The North did not want five more slave states because of the slave labor and that they would be outnumbered in Congress. When voted on Texas was admitted as a slave state, only one. This goes to show how sectionalism was increaseing.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
The Missouri Compromise was another example of sectionalism and how the North and South both are trying to win power in Congress. Missouri had tried multiple times to be admitted but the problem was that the North wouldn't allow it because it would be a slave state. However in 1850 Congress agreed to admitt Missouri as a slave state only if Maine was to be admitted as a free state. The Compromise was agreed on and both the North and South didn't get the upper hand in Congress, again.
  • Fugitive Slave Law

    Fugitive Slave Law
The Fugitive Slave Law was part of the Compromise of 1850. This law stated that any slave that escaped to a free state was to be returned to the state of the owner. This led to much abuse. People like bounty hunters who went searching for these slaves did not care if it was the correct person or not. They would take any person who looked somewhat like the slave. Even if a slave has been free all of his life and has papers to prove it could be kidnapped and forced into labor.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
Kansas was a newly gained terriotory and open to becoming a state soon. The North and South wanted to gain the upper hand by having more states. Thousands of people from the North moved toKansas, armed, soon the South sent their own, armed. When the two collided violence erupted. Attacks sent out at night, buildings getting burned, and kiling of children. Congress soon voted on it making it a free state. But this was the first violence between the North and South and they hated eachother for it
