    Mexico gains independence from spain. Texas is now a part of Mexico.

    Slavery was outlawed in Texas. But Austin convinced the government to let the slave owners keep their current slaves.

    The population in the colony swelled to 25,000 and outnumbered the tejanos 6 to 1.

  • War Begins!

    War Begins!
    Austin went to Mexico City to present a list of requests to Mexican officials. The Mexican president agreed with most of the reforms, but then he learned of a treasonous letter that Austin wrote! Santa Anna jailed Austin for almost a year. This made the Texans angry, so they got ready to rebel

  • The Come And Get It cannon

    The Come And Get It cannon
    Mexican soldiers were sent to the town of Gonzalez with orders to seize a cannon the Texans used for protection from the random Native Americans attacks. Texas volunteers hung a flag on the cannon saying, Come and Take It, but the soldiers couldn't.

  • Ambush at San Jacinto!

    Ambush at San Jacinto!
    Sam Houston and his army surprised Santa Anna and in 18 minutes, half the mexican army was killed. They forced Santa Anna to sign a treaty saying Texas is an independent country.

  • Washington on the Brazos

    Washington on the Brazos
    Texans met with/at a settlement called Washington on the Brazos
    and they decided to make Texas a free and independent republic. Sam Houston was placed in charge of the army, and then they decided what to do about General Santa Anna.

  • The Alamo

    The Alamo
    The Mexican president Santa Anna's troops went into San Antonio and the next day sieged the Alamo. Alamo's defenders surrvived the Mexicans off for 12 days. Then Santa Anna sent 1,800 troops to storm the fortress. All but 7 Texans were dead and more than 1,000 mexican soldiers dead.

  • Request to join the Union

    Request to join the Union
    The new Texan government asked the U.S. Congress if they could join the U.S., with the Union but Congress voted no because they didn't want to throw slave and non-slave states out of balance. The U.S. also didn't want a war with the Mexican army for taking in the Texans.

    Texans raised the official flag of the nation of Texas, nicknamed the Lone Star Republic. Sam Houston was their first president.
