    James Watt perfected the steam engine by using a rotary motion which in turn could allow the piston to move both foreward and backward therefore making the steam engine mre efficient for futher use, such as steam trains.

In 1802 Napoleon sends and army to capture Haiti. It was insuccessful but Toussaint is captured and dies in prison. Haiti becomes independent in 1804.

    Matthew Perry goes to Japan
    Four black ships arrived, commanded by Commmadore Matthew Perry, and anchored at Edo (Tokyo) Bay. Perry brought a letter from the President of the United States to the emporer of Japan. On March 31,1854 a treaty was made, which provided for:
    1) Peace between the United States and Japan
    2) Opening of two ports to American ships at Shimoda an Hakodate
    3) Help for any American ships wrecked on the Japanese coast and protection for shipwrecked persons.
    4) Permission for Americans to buy privisions
