A Mother's Reckoning pt. 2

  • Jr year Dylan got in trouble and family had lots of issues

This is important because it shows Dylan used to act before the Columbine shooting, for example Byron crashed his car which caused issues with the family, Byron also went through a lot of jobs, Sue started a new job and it took a pay cut made an impact on the family, The biggest stressor was the rapid decline in toms health, right when Dylan started high school. Money issues and health crises increase depression and suicide especially in teens. (this is mentioned in second half of the book)
  • Fighting and suspensions

This is important in the book because it shows what trouble Dylan was getting into before the shooting. Dylan was bullied and then started to get in fights and got suspended. Dylan had issues with a couple of guys at school so he lashed out and damaged their property which resulted in suspension and a fine. A few days later Dylan and Eric were arrested for breaking into a car. (Sue wrote this second half of book)
  • Diversion Termanation

Dylan and Eric got a recommendation to end their diversion program early which only 5% of participants get. This is ironic because everyone thought the boys were doing well but 10 weeks later the massacre happened. Around this time Dylan had also gotten accepted into 4 colleges so it seemed like life was going good for Dylan.
  • Sheriffs Department pg. 127

Sue and Tom Klebold went to the sheriffs department and they had all the information and evidence about what happened on April 20th. This is important because the Klebold family can finally find out what actually happened.
  • Depositions

The Klebold family had finally gotten the dates for their depositions which is important in the book because they will finally get their court dates.
  • Lost their home and bankruptcy

This is an important event in the book because they lost their home where they lived with their children and had to declare bankruptcy because of all the law suits filed against them. This would be a tragic event for anyone in this situation.
  • Sue is finally starting to feel better.

This is important because throughout the book after the Columbine shooting Sue was a mess, she cried everyday, there were somedays where she could hardly get out of bed, and now she says that she will always miss Dylan but she doesnt cry everyday over it anymore. She is on anti-depressants.
  • Divorce

Sue Klebold and Tom Klebold ended up getting a divorce. They got the divorce after 43 years of marriage, there was no common ground and no way to build a bridge back to each other. She realized that staying in the marriage was worse than getting the divorce, they still are friends and will always care about each other.
