MeckPAC Speaks About New City Ordinances
MeckPAC, a Charlotte LGBT organizations, says they have spoken with a city attorney and the CMCRC about new city ordinances that protect gender identity and expression. -
City Council Public Hearing
The City Council holds a public hearing to vote on adding protected classes. Many people come furious about the language of the proposal that implies Transgender people would have access to public restrooms that coincide with the gender they identify with. The amendment is voted down, 6-5. -
Election Day Changes Things
Charlotte elects Jennifer Roberts as its new Mayor, who openly supports the LGBT-inclusive changes originally proposed in March. Two new members of the CLT City Council, both Democrats, also support the changes. -
City Council Votes, McCrory Warns
CLT City Council, after another public hearing, votes 7-4 to add gay and transgender people to the list of classes protected against discrimination in Charlotte. McCrory warns two council members about the prospect of "immediate state legislative intervention." -
From Bathroom Issue, to Sexuality Issue
In just one day, the General Assembly signs HB2 into law, which goes far, far beyond the scope of the bathroom issue, and even goes out of its way to imply that LGBT People in NC are not protected by any law. McCrory signs it into law within hours of its passage. -
ACLU Lawsuit
The ACLU of NC leads a lawsuit against the state in federal court about the law. AG Roy Cooper calls the law, "a national embarassment", and refuses to let his office defend the state on the case just days later. -
Justice Dept. Fires Back
The U.S. Justice Dept. tells McCroy that HB2 violates federal civil rights laaw and asks him to respond by May 9th. McCroy and others follow with lawsuits against Dept. -
NBA Bails on NC
The National Basketball Association announces that it will relocate its 2017 All-Star Game because of HB2. -
City Council Reject Compromise
CLT Mayor and Council reject HB2 "compromise" by GA. McCroy calls special session to consider repeal of law, but, only if the City Council repeals its original ordinance. HB2 remains. -
Roy Cooper Wins Election
Roy Cooper wins the election for NC Governor against McCroy, but, McCrory calls foul because it is less than 10,000 votes. Recounts occur for a month, but, Cooper is eventually Governor of NC. -
HB2 Gone, HB142 Replaces It
Under pressure from everyone and their mother, the N.C. House and Senate vote to repeal HB2 and replace it with House Bill 142. But, the bill states that the legislature is the sole authority to regulate access to bathrooms, showers, and changing facilities, not any local ordinance.
