    Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglass both battle for a senatorial seat from the state of Illinois. This is the first time that the public hears Lincoln's name in politics. Stephen Douglass outlasts Lincoln to win the senatorial seat.

    Lincoln beats 3 other candidates in the general election. They were Breckenridge, Bell, and Douglass. Lincoln won the support of the North and also California and Oregon which had the most amount of electoral college votes.

    Due to the election of Lincoln S.C. seceded from the Union. After S.C. many other southern states seceded. They then formed their own country called the Confederate States.

    The 13th Amendment to the Constitution fully abolished slavery in the United States. Everyone that was a slave was now considered to be free and have the unalienable rights of any citizen. Slavery would now never occur in the U.S.
