Accepted spontaneous generantion, which was later disproved. He was against cell theory. -
Robert Hooke- Discovers Cells
Discovered and named cells. Allowed spontaneous generation to be disproved because he established cells were needed to have an organism. -
Anton van Leeuwenhoek- Discovers Bacteria
Discovered bacteria, free living and parasitic protists, sperm cells, blood cells, microscopic nematodes and rotifers among many other life forms. He made over 500 microscopes. His discoveries helped disprove spontaneous generation because of bacteria and single-celled organisms. -
Lorenz Oken- New System of Classification, Infusoria
Created a new system of classification for animals including:
Dermatoza: Invertabrates
Glossoza: Fish with tongues
Rhinozoa: Reptiles where nose opens into mouth
Otozoa: Birds with externaly open ears
Beleived that there were organisms called infusoria which make up skin and bones. His claims help spread the idea of cell theory.
Opthamozoa: Mammals with all sensory organs -
Robert Brown- Finds Nucleus
Recognized and named nucleus as constituent of living cells. Defined new families and genera for plants. Proved cell theory because his findings supported the idea that all organisms are made of cells. -
Matthias Schleiden- Plants Composed of Cells
Discovered that all plants are composed of cells. Co-founder of cell theory. Thought that the cell was center of vital force ( Vitalism Theory). Helped prove cell theory from his findings that all plants are made of cells. -
Thoedor Schwann-Proved Cellular Orign
Discovered digestive enzye pepsin, coined the term metabolism, and demonstrated that every animal tissue is composed of embyonic cells. Also proved cellular origin. Allowed scientists to disprove spontaneous generation because he was a co-founder of cell theory. He based his theory on the fact that all cells came previous cells. -
Albrecht von Roelliker- Sperm Cells are Cells
Realized sperm cells and egg cells are cells also. Proved that cells were needed to start life. -
Rudolf Virchow- Cells in Bones
Discovered groups of cells get sick instead of the whole organism. Finds cells in bones and leukemia. Helped to disprove spontaneous generation. Said that all cells exist because of previous cells existance (cell theory). -
Louis Pasteur- Invents Pasteurization
Preformed experiments that proved that molecules in the air caused food to go bad and that hazardous organisms didn't just appear from the food but that the molecules were attracted to the food. Disproved recipes of spontaneous generation. -
Asistotle- Animal Dissections
He dissected animals and came up with classifications that stand today. He helped people to understand more about animals and showed the complexity of animals which proved that the animals could not just appear. -
