Moses Fleetwood Walker
Moses Fleetwood Walker was the first official African-American baseball player. Walker debuted May 1, 1884, with his team the Toledo Blue Stockings. He joined the team after the club move to baseball's American Association. They beat the Louisville Eclispe on his debut game. -
Jack Johnsom
Jack Johnson is also know as the "Galveston Giant." In 1908 he became the first African American Heavyweight champion, He held the title for seven straight years. He died on June 10, 1946. -

In 1950 Charles Cooper became the first African American to be drafted by a NBA team. He was drafted by the Boston Celtics. Charles had a good career that lasted for 6 years. He and some other players opened the door for African Americans in basketball. -
Willie Thrower
Willie was drafted by the Chicago Bears in 1853. He was second string to George Balandra. On this date he made his first apperance in a game, and completed 3 out of 7 passes. He went on to finish the season with the Bears, but was released after the season. -
Jim Brown
Jim Brown annouced that he was retiring from the NFL. Cleveland Browns was not happy about his retirement, but was thankful for everything that he had did for them. He led the NFL for eight straight years in rushing yards. He ended his career carrying the ball 2,359 times and gained 12,312 yards for an average of 5.2 yards a carry. He also scored 126 touchdowns. -
Arthur Ashe
Arthur Ashe becomes the first African American male to win the U.S. open. He defeated Tom Okker. He went on to win other tennis championship. He opened the door for African Americans in tennis. -
Bo Jackson
Bo Jackson highlight runs Bo Jackson became the first person and African American to play two professional sports. He was signed by the Kansas City Royals. He played football for the Los Angeles Raiders. He had a good career in both sports. -
Vonetta Flowers
On this date Vonetta Flowers shocked the world by winning a gold medal in bobsledding. She became interested in bobsledding after she didn't qualify for the summer olympics as a sprinter. She did not give up on her dream to win a gold medal. Now she will be remembered for her great accomplishment.
