    Birth
    Alexander Graham Bell was born in Edinburgh, Scotland to his mother Eliza Grace Symonds Bell and his father Alexander Melville Bell on March 3, 1847. His mother was an artist and his father worked with the deaf. He was the second child of three. His two brothers Melville James Bell and Edward Charles Bell both died of tuberculosis. This is an important event because he will eventually invent the telephone and that will lead to the technology we have today.

    Husk Removing Machine
    When Bell was 12 in 1859 he made his first invention which was the Husk Removing Machine. He made this invention because a farmer had challenged him to make a machine that could remove the husks from grain. It was an easier and faster way to remove the husks. Bell made it out of nail brushes and a rotating paddle. The nail brushes were connected to the rotating paddle. This is an important event because it his first invention.

    The audiometer was a big part of his study. He created this because of the desire he had to help the deaf people. The device helped evaluate how well a person could hear. It produces a controlled sound varying in levels of intensity. The results were then compared to what an average human can hear. The unit of measurment used ia a decibel. This is an important event in his life because this was helping him fulfill his desire of helping the deaf.

    United States Civil War
    The U.S. Civil War was between the north and the south. the north was known as the Confederate States of America and the south was known as the Union. The war was started because of states rights versus federal authority, westward expansion, and most importantly slavery. Some histroic battles were at Bull Run, Antietam, Chacellorsville, Gettysburg, and Vicksburg. This was an important event because it would eventually lead to the abolishment of slavery.

    President Abraham Lincoln Assassination
    President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth at Ford Theater five days after the end of the Civil War. At 10:15 Booth went into Lincolns box and shot him in the back of the head with a .44 caliber single shot derringer. After that he leaped onto the stage and yelled "Sic semper tyrannis." Booth escaped at first but was later killed in a Virginia farmhouse on April 26.This is an important event because Lincoln was the first President ever to be assassinated.

    Teaching the Deaf to Talk
    Alexander Graham Bell studied how the mouth, throat, and ears work to make speech possible at University College in London, England. In Boston he worked at a school for the deaf. He also taught students privately. One of his students was Helen Keller. The phonautograph was used to help deaf poepe learn to speak more clearly. Bell had used an eardrum from a dead man for a part of the device that responded to the sound. This is important because he helped the deaf to talk better.

    The Telephone
    On March 3, 1876 Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Watson created the telephone. Alexander came up with the ideas and Watson created the equipment. They got the money to create the telephone from the fathers of two of his students. Bell and Watson were in seperate rooms and Bell heard something over the wire and called to Watson. He heard Bell's voice through the wire and recieved the first telephone call. This is significant because it was the first
    phone to ever be created.

    Bell Telephone Company
    On July 9, 1877 Alexander Graham Bell created the Bell Telephone Company. The company had to defend the telephone from law suits because people said that they created the telephone. Between 1877 and 1886 150,000 people in the U.S. owned telephones. They added the microphone which was invented by Thomas Edison. This was added so that people did not have to shout through the phone. This is significant because the Bell Telephone Company would later become AT&T.

    In the 1800s Alexander made improvements to the phonograph. He switched the tin foil cylinder to a wax coated cardboard cylinder. Bell also created the induction balance. President James Garfield was shot and Bell was needed to help find where the bullet was in his chest. He created a device that used electromagnets. It had a loop of wire that produced a magnetic field. This is an important event because he created a induction balance that has become more advanced.

    One of the first long distance lines was used in 1884. It was between Boston, Ma. and North Conway, NH. The line was 143 miles long. There was another line they made from Salem Ma. to Boston, Ma. and from Brantford to Paris. the Brantford to Paris line was a one way line and it had a distance of 8 miles. This was an important event because it was the first long distance line a telephone call was made on.

    Aviation was a later interest in life for Alexander GRaham Bell. He formed the Ariel experiment Association with Glen Curtis and other associates. Bell developed the tetrahedral kite and several other flying machines. One of his machines was the Silver Dart. This was the first powered machine flown in Canada. This is an important event because Bell was continuing to invent things and impacting technology.

    United States Declares war on Spain for Cuba
    President McKinley asked for a declaration of war on Spain. One of the reasons he wanted war was because the USS Battleship Maine sank from two explosives. Cuba had attempted to overthrow Spain and the U.S. helped them with money and allowed them to use America as a base for operations. Naval battles led by future President Theodore Roosevelt in the Philippines was at the end of the war. This is an important event because it will eventually lead to peace between the U.S. and Cuba.

    The first World Series was between the Boston Americans and the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Americans played their home games at Huntington Avenue Grounds and the Pirates played their home games at Exposition Park. The series was the result of a peace-pact signed by the presidents of both leagues. The Americans won the series 5 games to 3 games. This is an important event because the Wolrd Series is a tradition that today many people enjoy.

    Russian Revolution of 1905
    Priest Georgy Apollonovich Napon and a group of workers went to the czars winter palace in St. Petersberg. They went here to have the czar to meet their demands. The czars forces opened fire on them and killed and wounded hundreds. Riots broke out throughout the country. This is an important event because it led to the czar creating representive assemblies to work towards refrom.

    The First World War was between the Central Powers and the Allied Powers. The Central Powers included Germany, Austria, Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire. The Allied Powers included Great Britian, France, Russia, Italy, Japan, and later the United States. Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated by a Serbian nationalist. This was one of the reasons that the war started. This is an important event because it is the first totally global conflict.

    Alexander Graham Bell died on August 2,1922 in Baddeck, Nova Scotia, Canada. He died peacefully with his wife next to him. In tribute to his life the entire telephone system was shut down for one minute.This is an important event becasue the inventor of the telephone had died.
