    Free slaves who migrated after the Civil War. They were basically black cowboys.

    The supreme court ruling for Plessy V Ferguson, that blacks would have serperate but equal quarters and education. This meant that they would have sperate restaurants, restrooms, schools, and water fountains, and so on.

    Jim Crow Laws

    A set of local laws enforced by a community. Segregated whites and blacks. Prevented blacks from voting and introduced literacy laws.

    Began after the assassination of President Andrew Garfield. The act set up strict regulations and standard for people who ran for political offices. Started Civil Service Exams.

  • Sherman Anti-trust Act

    A vaguely worded document that tried to end monopolies. It was hard to enforce because of its poor writing. It was the first to try and outlaw trusts.

    Imperial America

    A time in which the US wanted to conquer more land and grow in power. We started war against Spain to take it's land.
  • Ellis Island

    An island off the coast of New York. It served as a stopping place for immigrants so that they could under go quotas and testing.
  • Willmington Race Riot

    White voters were made that blacks could vote in their town. They decided to grab their guns and started killing blacks who tried to vote.
  • Spanish American War

    Empirial America begana war with Spain. We started it in the Philipeans, fought in Cuba, but battle the Spanish. We gained Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam, and Alaska during this time.
  • Election of 1912

    Former President Roosevelt and Taft ran against one another with Republican ideas but they were both popular and split the vote. Woodrow Wilson won the race as a Democrat.
  • Clayton Act

    A better case against trusts. This Act made monopolies illegal so that people could not corrupt governements using money and denying its country of the resource they owned. Enforced that businesses needed competition.
  • Flappers

    Women who decided to stand out amongst the crowd. They dressed in far more comfortable clothes and were not afraid to show a little skin. This created a movement among women to be more individual and not go by certain standards.

    Prohibition

    The 18th amendment making alcohol in the United States illegal. This led to a ton of bootlegging of alcohol. Speak easies opened as secret clubs that served alcohol. Alcohol was made and transported by organized criminals like the mafia all of the US.
  • Nativists

    The fear of European radicalism and culture. Set quotas on how many Europeans could immigrate into the states. Asians were considered inelligable.

    The Great Depression

    It began with a stock market crash that left thousands of investors as broke. The banks didn't have money to give out due to all the selling of stocks. The Dust Bowl made things worse during this time.
  • Harlem Renaissance

    The rise of black arts and culture. Musicians and artists like Longston Hughes, Louis Armstrong, and Duke Ellington came about enlightening the world.

    Wind started to carry dirt in the air. A large drought caused the great plains to be dry and the tilling for farming loosened up all the soil.
  • Sun Belt

    A region in the US stretching from Southeast to Southwest. Increased population and industry during this time.
  • Indian Reorganization Act

    An act set up to expand Indian reservations. Helped to lessen the tension between Indians and whites.
  • Civil Rights Act

    This act ended discrimination for all ethnicities, cultures, gender, and so on. This granted true freedom for all American citizens. Racism would still exist but discrimination in jobs would not be tolerated.
