Education was not free nor public and only the larger towns were required to build schools. Horn book and the New England Primer were used to supplement education. Horace Mann promoted the idea of a free education funded by tax dollars. -

People funded towns throughout the west. Their main priority was to bring in tourists. As a result schools tended to be neglected. -

School attendance required and child labor became illegal. Basic health care and food were promoted for children. -

Group of educators that recommended the standardiation of American High school curriculum. -
Impact of Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson passed a law to allow children at least 3 years of education at the expense of the public. The law did not allow for women to be educated past 3 years or for slaves to be educated in schools. -
Population Growth and Immigration
32 million immigrants migrated to the United States in the 1900's. 3 of those 32 million immigrants were children. The migration of immigrants doubled from what it had been in the early 1800's. -
The Gary Plan
Led by William Wirt who was the superintendent of Gary's schools in 1907. Wirt developed the Gary Plan which was influenced by John Dewey. Parents ended up rioting the Gary Plan and schools returned to a traditional teaching method. -
John Dewey
John Dewey is known as the Father of Progressive education. He felt that schools would be different if they appealed to the interests and curiousity of children. Was influenced by Froebel and Pestalozzi to educate the "whole child." -
Brown vs. Board of Education
African American students were being turned away from schools that had better facilities and materials than their own school. Supreme Court unanimously voted that the schools were "Separate but unequal." Local government refused to integrate which lead to the President LBJ to call in troops and threaten schools with the loss of funding. -
Sputnik and NDEA
Sputnik was launched by the Soviet Union in 1957 causing the United States to feel the need to race people in the exploration of space. Math and science are heavily emphasized in the United States. The National Defense Education Act established in 1958 and has helped fund student loans -
Elementary and Secondary Education Act
Part of President LBJ's War on Poverty. Gave the opportunity for each child to be able to obtain a fair and equal education. -
Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act
Before the act, states had laws prohibiting students with disabilities to attend schools. The IDEA helped students with disabilities be able to attend a free, public school in the least restrictive environment. -
No Child Left Behind
Schools and teachers were held accountable for the yearly progress of students. throughout the years the schools could receive a punishment if the AYP was not met.
