  • Colonial Slavery

    African slaves were brought to Jamestown in 1619 but then, there were only few of them. It wasn't until 1670 that Virginia had about 2,000 black slaves. During that year, blacks made up about 7% of the southern population. By the 1680's, there were more black slaves than white indentured servants.
  • Tobacco Economy

    Lots of tobacco was being shipped out of the Chesapeake bay every year. 1.5 million pounds and by the end of the century, almost 40 million. That's why lost of families who planted tobacco needed more people to work on their plantations. For that reason the "Headright" system was created, to bring more servants into the plantations. They were promised clothing, food, shelter, and a piece of land in exchange for their labor.
  • Bacon's Rebellion

    Nathaniel Bacon led over a thousand Virginians to revolt against the Virginia government. They attacked the Indians and tried to attack the Virginia governor, William Berkeley. Although almost successful, Bacon, the leader of the rebellion, died of a mysterious , and Berkeley took this as an advantage to stop the others.
  • Salem Witch Trials

    About 20 women were lynched in Salem, Massachusetts in 1962 for being accused of witchcraft. The witch hunt stopped when the Massachusetts governor prohibited in 1693.
