Treaty of Paris
The Treaty of Paris ended the French and Indian War between France and Britain and divided the territories of North America. -
Proclamation Act
The Proclamation Act stated that land west of the Appalachian Mountains were off-limits to the colonists. They could settle and live there. -
Sugar Act
The Sugar Act put a tax on certain kinds of food like sugar and molasses. For example, colonists had to pay 3 pence per gallon of molasses. -
Stamp Act
Because of this act, printed documents like newspapers, pamphlets, and wills were required to have a stamp. A tax was placed on the stamps. -
Quartering Act
Colonists were required to house British soliders if needed. -
Stamp Act Congress
Held in New York CIty, representatives of the colonies gathered and talked about a protests against the British taxes. -
Stamp Act Repealed
After months of protest, Parliament voted to repeal the Stamp Act. -
Declaratory Act
Also known as the American Colonies Act, the Declaratory Act followed the removal of the Stamp Act. This acted stated that England had the same power in America as they did in England. -
Townshend Act
The Townshend Act put a tax on glass, lead, paints, paper, and tea. -
Boston Massacre
Although this event is referred to as a massacre, only 5 colonists were killed. The British were in the town of Boston and several colonists were protesting. This event lead to the American Revolution. -
Commitee of Correspondence
This comitee dealt with problems in the colonies. -
Tea Act
This act did not put a tax on tea (as it was already being taxes) but gave a British company a "monopoly" on tea. -
Boston Tea Party
A group of colonists disguised themselves as Indians and snuck onto a ship in Boston Harbor. They grew crates of tea into the ocean. -
Intolerable Acts
These were a series of different laws that were meant to punish the colonists for the Boston Tea Party. -
Declaration of Rights and Grievances
A document that states that taxes placed by the British are unconstitutional. -
1st Continental Congress
This was a meeting of 12 of the 13 colonies which took place in Philadelphia. -
Lexington and Concord
This was the first battle fought in the Revolutionary War. The colonists won this battle. -
Battle at Bunker Hill
The British fought the American. Even though the British won, the British suffered a heavy loss of men. -
Olive Branch Petition
This petition was an attempt to stop the war between the British and the colonists. -
Common Sense
Common Sense is a pamphlet written by Thomas Paine. The purpose of this piece was to convince colonists why they should go to war with England. -
Declaration of Independence
This document stated reasons why the colonists were seperating from England and why they declared their freedom.
