  • Election of 1824

    Election of 1824
    The Canidates for this election were: Andrew Jackson, John Q. Adams, Henry Clay, and William Crawford. Andrew Jackson was the winner of the Popular Vote, but nobody won the electoral vote. When the vote was handed over to the house of representatives John Q. Adams won, because Clay was part of the House of Reps. and was bribed into voting for Adams. Jackson called this a "corrupt bargain".

    This election was between, former president, John Q. Adams and Andrew Jackson. In this election Andrew Jackson won by a landslide because of his popularity. The impact was, because of his popularity among the citizens, he was able to serve another term.

    Indian Removal Act
    The indian removal act forced Indian tribes off of Georgia. This caused many deaths within the Indian tribes. Some tribes went against the government in a series of conflicts called 'The Seminole Wars'. The result of this was, the Natives were pushed into Indian Territiory which is present day Oklahoma.

    Worcester vs. Georgia
    Jackson then sent officials to make treaties with the Native Americans in the Southeast. In 1834 Congress established the Indian Territory. \Most eastern Native American peoples felt forced to sell their land and move west. The Cherokee refused to do so.Georgia pressured the Cherokee. In response, the Cherokee turned to the U.S. Supreme Court. In Worcester v. Georgia (1832), Chief Justice John Marshall ruled that Georgia had no right to interfere with the Cherokee.

    Jackson didn't belive in the bank because he belived it had too much control and that the owners were corrupt. When the bank started cutting back on loans to farmers in the west, that's when Jackson thought it had gone to far and decided that he needed to shut it down. He did this by vetoing the charter for the bank when it came around again thus ending its existance.
  • Nullification Crisis

    Nullification Crisis
    The nullification crisis was cause by the ''protective tariff " placed on imported goods. This tariff hurt the South, beacuse they had to pay extra on imported goods. This benifited the North because they didn't have to compete with other countries that imported their goods. The vice president, John C. Calhoun, was from South Carolina and belived in state's rights so the Nullification Act was passed and this declaired the the tariff illegal. South Carolina had threatened to secede as well.
