North Vietnam invaded South Vietnam, and the United States feared the spread of communism. The United States fought against the North Vietnamese and lost. The United States first lost.

    The organization Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) held its first Anti-war protest in Washington DC. 25,000 people showed up to support the protest and demands for the end of the war, including the Women’s Strike for Peace group. They marched down to the capitol to deliver a petition to end the war.

    Even though MLK was a supporter of President Johnson, he was starting to doubt the president. Giving a speech in the Riverside church in NYC in front of 3,000 people. He argued that the government focused more on a war that’s 8 thousand miles away than dealing with domestic issues right there in the United States. King also thought that drafting the poor was not fair because they haven’t even gotten a chance to save themselves. He fought for his belief until his assassination in 1968.

    This song was written and sung by Country Joe and the Fish in protest to the Vietnam War. It mostly made fun of the war and added GI humor, like a soldier asking a general what they were fighting for and the general said "I don't know don't ask me".

    March on Pentagon
    With 100,000 people and a bunch of limp flowers, the result of a peaceful protest in front of the Lincoln Memorial, marched to the Pentagon carrying a red blue and gold flag, the flag of the Vietcong. Trying to be peaceful in the situation of being at guns point, protesters then turned violent and fought with U.S. Marshals guarding the Pentagon. 683 people were arrested after this.
  • Kent State Massacre

    Kent State Massacre
    The Kent State Massacre took place over four days in Kent, Ohio. Students of Kent State University held protests over each day as a result of President Nixon deciding to invade Cambodia. The students burned businesses including the ROTC building on their campus in protest of the continuation of the war after believing it was close to ending. The governor of Ohio declared a state of emergency and sent the National Guard to take care of the protest. 4 students were killed and 9 injured.
