He wasn’t a noble, but he gain the royal family confidence, even he was king favourite from 1793 to 1808. He was a polemic figure because of his past and the position he was in. This also caused him enemies in the clergy and nobility. -
TREATY OF FONTAINEBLEAU
It was signed by Godoy and Napoleon in 1807. The objective was to conquer Portugal to divided it between Spain and France. Also to block Great Britain. -

He was Napoleon’s brother. He was support by the “afrancesados” who had liberal and reformist ideas. Although he was hate by the absolutists who supported Fernando VII. -
WAR OF INDEPENDENCE

Finally the was a popular uprising in Madrid, later expanding all around the Iberian Peninsula. The 2nd of May 1808 the War of Independece had started. -
CORTES OF CÁDIZ
In 1812, the “Junta General Suprema” called representatives from all the provinces to celebrate the Cortes, with the objective of writing a Constitution.
There were to groups:
- Absolutists: who were mostly priests and supported the Ancient Regime.
- Liberals: bourgeoisie, “afrancesados”, those who wanted social and political changes and to finish with the Ancient Regime. -

Name as “La Pepa” was the first try to establish the Liberalism in Spain, and finally end with the Ancient Regime. -
END OF THE WAR OF INDEPENDENCE
It had national consequences as 500.000 civilians and soldiers. It caused hunger and poverty. Also, buildings where destroyed and works of art where stolen and there was a huge agrarian, economical… lost. Internationally, it was one of the first defeats of the french army causing 200.000 dead’s. Furthermore, it caused the that Spanish colonies fight for hip their independence. -

After the death of Fernando VII, there was a problem of succession. So he made the “Pragmatic sanction”, so her daughter, Isabel II, was declared the inheritor of the crown. However, she was underaged, so her mum, Maria Cristina, took the charge. -
REGENCY OF ESPARTERO
The general Espartero was considered a carlist war hero, also due to the exile of Maria Cristina he took the charge. He was a progressive liberal. Although, the moderate militar uprisings caused his exile in Britain. -
REIGN OF AMADEO DE SABOYA

Due to the problems that the Borbones had caused in the last years, they looked for a king in the European royalty. Amadeo de Saboya was the one who suited with the situation where Spain was. Although, the murder of general Prim, his principal support, caused the king many enemies. Finally he abdicated in 1873. -
1° SPANISH REPUBLIC

Rupublicans didn’t agree what typo of republic to implement, federal o unitary, finally they decided the federal. It only lasted for 11 months due to the bad political and economic situation.
