Apartheid Legislation and Activity

  • The Natives Land Act, No 27 of 1913

    Black people weren't allowed to have land if it wasn't on a reserve.
  • The Natives (Urban Areas) Act of 1923

    Living areas were separated by race.
  • Group Areas Act, Act No 41 of 1950

    All of the races were separated by residential areas, causing limited interaction between them.
  • Separate Representation of Voters Act, Act No 46 of 1951

    Colored people were no longer allowed to vote, which caused them not to be able to express their opinions.
  • Natives Laws Amendment Act of 1952

    It was made so that it was harder for people of color to find places to live.
  • Reservation of Separate Amenities Act, Act No 49 of 1953

    Black people and White people were no longer allowed to use the same things, and generally white people were provided with nicer things.
  • Bantu Education Act, Act No 47 of 1953

    Made it harder for black people with educations to get jobs with those educations.
  • Extension of University Education Act, Act 45 of 1959

    It was made so that it was harder for black people to attend colleges and get higher educations.
  • Sharpville Massacre

    Police officers in South Africa fired at and killed 67 people and injured far more at a peaceful protest.
  • Bantu Homelands Citizens Act of 1970

    People were forced to become citizens of places whether they had ever lived there in their lives based off of their ethnicity.
