  • Battle of Puebla

    The French attacked Puebla, Mexico. Surprisingly, Mexico defeated the French. The French attacked Mexico City soon after.
  • French Troops Withdraw

    The French withdrew from Mexico with pressure from the United States. This ended hostility between France and Mexico.
  • United States Purchases Alaska

    The Alaska Purchase was the purchase of Alaska from the Russian Empire by a treaty ratified by the US Senate.
  • Reciprocity Treaty of 1875

    The treaty gave access to the United States market for sugar and other products grown in the Hawaii.
  • Alfred Thayar Mahan Writes Novel

    Alfred Thayar Mahan wrote The Influence of Sea Power upon History which argued a country control of the seas for dominance.
  • Overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii

    A goup of Americans overthrew Queen Liliuokalani to create a new government that better interested them. Howver, they wanted complete annexation.
  • Annexation of Hawaii

    Hawaii was annexed for military reasons and granted statehood in 1959.
  • US Declares War on Spain

    The United States declaring war on Spain begins the Spanish-American war.
  • Spanish-American War- Battle of Manila Bay

    The Battle of Manila Bay was the first battle in the Spanish-American war. The U.S. destroyed the Spanish fleet.
  • Spanish-American War- US Troops Land in Cuba

    The first US troops landed in Cuba during the war efforct on June 22, 1898.
  • Spanish-American War- Battle of San Juan Hill

    Americans battle Spanish Forces at San Juan Hill in their plan to capture Santiago de Cuba.
  • Spanish-American War- Battle of Santiago Bay

    The Battle of Santiago Bay was a key naval engagement of the Spanish–American War, destroying the Spanish fleet.
  • Spanish American War- Seige of Santiago

    The Spanish surrendered after the Seige of Santiago, in Cuba.
  • Spanish-American War- Protocol of Peace

    The Protocol of Peace ended hostility between Spain and the United States.
  • Spanish American War- Treaty of Paris

    Spain and the United States signed the Treaty of Paris which agreed to peace and the US ownership of Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Manila.
  • Open Door Policy with China

    This policy was issued by the United States and stated that there should be equal privileges among countries trading with China.
  • Phillipine-American War- War Begins

    The Phillipines officially declares war on the United States because they wanted independence.
  • Boxer's Rebellion in China

    A Chinese organization, the Society of the Righteous and Harmonious Fists, led an uprising in northern China against the spread of Western and Japanese influence.
  • Phillipine-American War- McKinley Assassinated

    Leon Czolgosz shoots President McKinley, assassinating him in New York.
  • Big Stick Diplomacy- The Venezualan Affar

    Roosevelt condemned the blockade of Venezuela by Britain and Germany and announced a policy in which he U.S. would intervene in the finances of Caribbean and Central American countries.
  • Big Stick Diplomacy- Panama Canal Affair

    United States helped Panama revolt against Columbia in order to get rights to build and use the Panama Canal.
  • Panama Canal- Panama Gains Independence

    Panama gained independence from Colombia, allowing the US to intervene in affairs.
  • Panama Canal- Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty

    The Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty established the Panama Canal zone and the construction of the canal.
  • Russo-Japanese War

    The Russo-Japanese War was fought between the Russia and Japan over rival imperial ambitions.

    Dollar diplomacy was a foreign policy created by U.S. Pres. William Howard Taft that ensured the financial stability through U.S. loans.
  • World War I-Archduke Assassinated

    The assassination of the archduke sparked the start of World War I.

    Armistice Day marks the armistice between World War I allies and Germany.
  • The First Red Scare

    The first Red Scare began following the very patriotic years of World War 1. It was the fear of communism to the United States.
