    Isreal declares independance as a nation. Subsequently, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Iraq attacked Israel. This war lasted until March 10th, 1949. After the war, Israel gained land, Egypt gained the Gaza Strip, and Jordan gained the West Bank and East Israel. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians and Jews became refugees.     Egypt and Syria attack Isreal on Yum Kippur. After initial Arab success, Isreal was able to hold off attacks.     After the United States severely intervened in diplomatic relations between Israel and Egypt, the two Middle Eastern countries finally signed a peace agreement that allowed Egypt to fully recognise Israel as a country.     PLO units attacked North Israel. Isreal immediately retaliated.     Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and West Bank vioeltly rebelled against Israel and its occupation of their land until September 13, 1993. The PLO armed and organizes the rebellion and Israel was forced to use military force to contain the rebellion. As a result of this rebellion, maly Palestinian and Israeli lives were lost in the violent fighting and tensions grew to an extreme degree between Israelis and Palestinians.

    A set of afreements startingin 1993between Isreal and PLO, They signed the Declaration of Principles to try and stop the violence. Palestinian Authority was created.     When Israeli general Ariel Shanon visited the religious site Temple Mount, a site revered by both Jews and Arabs, many Palestinians were angered and saw this act as disrespectful and so many rioted against Israel and thier occupation of Palestine. Many Palestinians suicide bombed Israeli cisites and many people on both sides of the battle were injured or killed, and tensions between the two people got much worse.

    Arab Peace Initiative is Proposed
    During the Beirut summit, the Saudi Arabian King proposed a treaty in which Israel would return land to Palestine and allow it to become an independant state and in return the fighting would stop and Israel would be recognised by a country by all. This was a major breakthrough because for the first time many countries tried to initaite peace and were willing to negotiate with another.

    The 2006 Lebanon War
    The radical Islamist organization from Lebanon called Hezbollah attacked Israel by attacking an Israeli military unit killing 8 men and kidnapping 2 more. At the same time, they fired rockets into Israeli towns and cities. Israel retaliated by firing rockets at suspected Hezbollah targets and launching a ground offensive. The war ended on August 11 of the same year.

    This war was an Israeli military offensive to stop airstikes from coming into Israel and cut off arms smuggling into the Gaza Strip. This attack resulted in over a thousand casualties but succeded in greatly numbering the amount of airstrikes coming into Israel from Gaza.
