    1948 War

    Six Day War
    Eygpt blockaded Israel. Eygpt, Jordan, Syria and Iraq moved troops to Israel's borders and made threatning statements. Israel launched a preemptive strike. Israel captured the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, the Golan Heights from Syria, and the Gaza Strip and all of the Sinai Peninsula from Eygpt.Terrorism became more common.     Settlement Construction Begins
    The Israel government approved the building at the settlements in Gaza and West Bank. Security prevented attacks.     Attrition Battles
    Israel gained land from Eygpt, Syria, and Jordan. Israel offered to make peace in order for their land back. Jordan succeeded in evicting the PLO (Palestinian Liberation Organization) from the country in 1971. The PLO moved its base opperation to Lebannon. The attrition batlles ended in August of 1970.     Eygpt and Syria attacked Israel. The U.S. convincved Israel to withdrawl from the territores it had entered. Israel kept the territories captured but did keep additional land.     Egypt is the first country to recognize Israel and enter into a peace treaty with it. War with Israel was harming to the economy and well being of people. Israel returned all sSrians that were captured in the war. Removed jews from home established there.

    PLO untis in Lebanon attacked the commander in Israel. Israel launched an attack on PLO military in Lebanon. This renewed terrorist attacks from southern Lebanon which led to the second Lebanon war in 2008.The Lebanon war ended in September.

    Palestinians in the West Bank enageed in an uprising against israeli control of those territories. The Israeli army wasn't prepared for the attacks.     Israel general visited Jewish temples which were revered by Jews. This temple was very important to Muslisms as well. There was a lack of the peace process and Palestinians did not like the Israeli General's visit so they began to riot. This caused bloodshed and suffering for both the Israelis and Palestinians.

    Israel decided to build a security barrier to seperate themselves from terrorists in West Bank. This reduced the amonunt of suicide bombings, however it divided some Palestinians from their land. Some want the barrier to be removed and others want to keep it for the sake of safety.

    Roadmap for Peace Proposal
    Roadmap was a plan for peace proposed by the "Quartet," the United States, Russia, the European Union, and the United Nations. The goal of it was to gain an independent Palestinian state and a secure Israel. The proposal was divided into three phases but never made it passed the first phase. Progress of the proposal stopped after the election of Hamas. After Palestinian president dissolved the Hamas
    government, the Roadmap was in effect once again.

    Israel Disengagement from Gaza
    Prime Minister Ariel went foward with the policy of "Disengagement." It was the physical separation of Israel from Palestinian territories. Ariel wanted Israel to withdraw from the Gaza Strip but Israeli citizens did not want to leave. Ultimately, Israel left the Palestinian terrioty. This caused the amount of terrorism to increase dramatically.

    Election of Hamas
    Palestinians elected a majority of Hamas to the Palestinian Authority's legislature. Many believed Hamas won the election because the many Palestinians sw the previous government as corrupt. Hamas were repsonsible for hundreds of terrorist attacks. As of result of the Hamas election, Western nations imposed sanctions and suspended aid.     The 2006 Lebanon War
    Islamist organization, Hezbollah, was committed to destroying Israel. Hezbollah is believed to be supported by Iran and Syria. They crossed the Lebanon-Israel border, attacked an Israeli army, and killed 10 soldiers. They also began launching rockets into Israeli cites and towns. In repsonse, Israel decided to launch ait strikes on a Hezbollah military.

    There was tension between Hamas and the PLO Fatah because Hamas won the Palestinian election. This tension was so great that Hama militants attacked Fatah memebers. As a result, the Palestinian Authority president dissolved the Hamas government. Western sanctions were lifted after Hamas was dissolved and today Hamas controls Gaza and the Palestinian Authority controls West Bank Erlanger, Steven.     Israel attacked Hamas in Gaza to stop rocket attacks, disrupt terroist infrastructure, and weapon smuggling. Hundreds of militants were killed and Gaza's buildings and economy was damaged.

    Gaza Flotilla
    Israel and Egypt began a blockade of Gaza. All goods were required to be inspected to prevent weapon smuggling of Hamas. Because of this, six ships sailed to break into the blockade. Israelis told them they could not enter Gaza, but they did not listen to them. As a result, Israeli commandos boarded the ship and attacked the commandos on the ship.     Arab Spring
    Citizens in Arab states protested against autocractic and opressive governments. Protests spread from Tunisia across the Arab world. As a result, the Tunisian president left the country and the Egpytian president resigned. The long-term impact and the ongoing changes are left unclear.
