The locket is made
The locket is made of gold and the exterior is decorated with stones, rubies, emeralds, opals, diamonds, and a pearl pendant. The man depicted on the inside is Sir Bevil Grenville. -
War and love
The English Civil War broke out and Grenville stepped up as leader and successfully led his men at the Battle of Braddock Down. Unfortunately, Grenville passed away from injury in 1643 at the Battle of Lansdowne. -
The Jewel is Passed on
Shortly after his passing, Grenville had a monument made for him in Somerset, England pictured here. The jewel was passed onto his wife Lady Dame Grace as a token of love. -
The jewels journey
Sir Grenville's wife Grace died in 1647, and the locket was inherited by their oldest daughter. It then went on to her nephew, and then his sister. -
End of the family line
In 1880, the Queen requested the jewel to be sold to her, which was approved for $1,355. This was the end of the passing down of the jewel through its family.
