    Gowns in the 1800's usually had skirts that were open in the front and dresses were very lightweight. The colour of choice for most gowns was white.

    Dresses during this time were very highwaisted, this waistline lowered through the decade. Gowns were made with soft, light colours. Sleeves on womens dresses were fuller at shoulders.

    Skirts of dresses in the 1820's were cut in an 'A' shape with a lower waistline. Dresses of this time period also got more complex and got fuller to the bottom of the skirts. This decade started neck ruffles and slashing in sleeves.

    Womens gowns were often untrimmed and were made at ankle length. The sleeves of this decade were very large on dresses and multiple petticoats were worn. The preferential fabric for gowns was cotton.

    This time period consisted of bell shaped skirts with elongated waistlines. The corsets worn under these dresses were made from whalebone and lace. Sleeves narrowed down and became slimmer.

    Necklines during this time rose making them extremly high. Petticoats were often made from wool or flannel for dresses and jewlery was never often wore by women. Corsets during this time were not tightly laced, given women more freedom to move. The skirts of dresses reached their maximum size.

    The skirts of dresses during this time were oval shaped and shifted backwards giving it a 'flat fronted' apperance. This time period also had a big variety of hats.
