The role of women in the 1950s
Some women challenged traditional values and remained in the paid workforce. However they were usually paid less than men for performing the same work and were often employed in routine, low-status positions. The women's rights movement was still a decade away -
Discrimantory government policies
in 1951, the federal government convened the Native Welfare Conference. The conference adopted a policy of assimilation of Aboriginal people into non-Indigenous. Many Indigenous children were taken from their families,(the stolen generation). In 1957, the Federal Council for the Advancement of Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders was set up, they brought a number of civil rights and Aboriginal welfare organizations, its work played a large part in bringing about the 1967 referendum. -
Immigration
During 1951 and 1952 the Australian government signed agreements to accept Dutch, Italian, Austrian, Belgian, Greek, Spanish and West German immigrants, The discriminatory government policies also affected immigration, because of the white Australia policy only people from Caucasian backgrounds were allowed to come to the country -
