First Europeans in Australia
The first Europeans ot arrive in Australia were Dutch. When they arrived they were attacked by the aborigines and abandoned further exploration. -
Captain James Cook Arrives
When Captain James Cook arrived he ignored the Aborigines and claimed land for England and called it New South Wales. -
"First Fleet"
A British ship called the "First Fleet" left for Australia. It was a ship full of convicts on its way to establish a penal colony. -
Prison settlement
The first prisoners from Britain settled. There was no one else there other than convicts, marines, and the marines wifes. -
Official penal colony
The colony of New South Wales was an official penal colony. Only 20% of the first convicts were women. -
British Stopped Transporting Prisoners
To many free immigrants came and started to build businesses,trading posts,and farms. They started earning money. -
Immigration Restriction Act
This restricted migration to people primarily of European decent and was dismantled after World War 1. -
Establishing Government
The commonwealth of Australia was established. This soon led to the development of parlaiment. -
Help for the aborigines.
The federal government began passing laws to help the aborigines with their rights. -
Australia Act
All legal ties with the British Empire were severed. Australia was still under British control but had the freedom of its own government. -
No Independece
55% of voters rejected the idea of becoming and independent republic.
