    After he brought the papal residency back to Rome he died a year afterwards which in turn led to the Western Schism

    Western Schism

    After the death of Gregory XI, Pope Urban VI took over which led to the breakdown in relations between the cardinals and himself, which led to the Western Schism, which began a second line of Avignon Popes who were considered illegitimate and known as the antipopes. The antipope lost most of his support in 1398.
