    Rome had already started to fall apart but 2 men had decided to do something about it. In AD 284 Diocletian had become emperor and had encountered a great amount of problems. These problems had led to poor leadership, revolts, and disloyalty.
    AD 307 Constantine became emperor. He had ruled from 307-337 AD he was Rome's 1st christian leader and also a strong one. A bad move by him was moving to the east, most attacks happened in the east. In AD 410 Alaric captured Rome.

    The First Punic War began in 264 B.C. when Rome sent troops to Sicily and the Carthaginians saw this as an act of war. The Romans had a very strong army but with no navy they could not win the war.The Romans built up a great navy to win the war with. After a long and hard fought war the Romans defeated the Carthaginian in 261 B.C.. Carthage gave up all rights to Sicily and paid a fine to the Romans. The Carthaginians vowed revenge which leads to the Second Punic War.

    Hannibal and the Carthaginians attacked Rome to start The Second Punic War. Hannibal crossed the Alps with 46,000 men, lots of horses, and 37 war elephants. Many men and most of the elephants died because of the harsh conditions of the Alps. The Romans tried to meet Hannibal at Cannae but took a very big loss, losing 40,000 men. They did not surrender but built up their army to fight again. The Romans attacked Carthage and in 202 B.C. they Defeated Hannibal ending the war.

    50 Years after the Second Punic War, the Romans faced the Carthaginians for the third and final time in 149 B.C.. After three years of fighting in 146 B.C., Carthage was destroyed. Roman soldiers burned and demolished all the city and its buildings for 10 days. They also sold 50,000 men, women, and children into slavery. Carthage became a Roman province called Africa. In this same time the Romans took Macedonia to expand their territory.
